Ten Sri Lankan players opt out of Pakistan tour

Ten Sri Lankan players opt out of Pakistan tour”

Many of Sri Lanka's senior players have expressed their concerns about travelling to Pakistan for a limited overs series as they are anxious about the security situation in the country.

Besides Karunarantne, Malinga and Mathews, the other players who have opted out of the Pakistan tour for limited-over fixtures are Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya De Silva, Thisara Perera, Akila Dhananjaya, Suranga Lakmal and Dinesh Chandimal.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today held a meeting with players, who were chosen as part of a preliminary squad to select the team, which will be touring Pakistan to play 03 ODIs and 03 T20i matches, starting from 27th September to 09th October, 2019 - SLC announced in a media release.

Following a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus during a Test match in Lahore in March 2009, a majority of global teams have refused to tour the South Asian country.

The Sri Lankan team will reach Karachi on 25 September and play three ODIs before going to Lahore for three T20 matches and return home on 9 October.

As part of the World Test Championship in December, Pakistan hope to host their first Test on home soil since a 2009 attack on Sri Lanka's team bus in Lahore which saw six security staff and two civilians killed and six players injured.

In response to the development, the PCB in a statement said that the participation or non-participation of senior players does not matter as the Sri Lankan team is nevertheless arriving for a complete tour.

The Sri Lankan cricket board had given the freedom to its players to choose if they want to travel to Pakistan.

Kusal Mendis was not available for selection due to an injury he suffered during the New Zealand Series.

Pakistan did not host global matches for six years following the attack, with the team playing their home games in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but have hosted teams such as Zimbabwe and West Indies in recent years. Sri Lankan sports minister Harin Fernando will finalise the selection for the two squads.
