Typhoon Lingling kills 8 in Korean peninsula

Typhoon Lingling kills 8 in Korean peninsula”

A typhoon has hit the Asian nation, leaving at least five people dead and three people injured, Trend reports citing Sputnik.

North Korea is vulnerable to floods, due in part to deforestation and poor infrastructure.

More than 230 flights were cancelled and power outages were reported in more than 30,000 South Korean homes, while public parks and zoos were closed for the weekend due to heavy rain and strong winds. "The injured persons are now under treatment at hospitals", KCNA said.

North Korea is also dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Lingling.

North Korea's state TV on Saturday reported that an unspecified number of homes and buildings had been damaged and showed footage of flooded streets and toppled trees.

"Crops fell down, (were) inundated or buried in 46,200 hectares of farmland", the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Saturday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "urgently convened" an emergency meeting on Friday to prepare for the storm, where he chastised North Korean officials as "helpless against the typhoon, unaware of its seriousness and seized with easygoing sentiment", according to North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency, reports the AP.

Typhoons that made a landfall in South Korea in past years caused greater damage and more casualties.

After slamming South Korea, Typhoon Lingling moved to North Korea on Saturday, raising concerns about crop damages in an isolated country that frequently suffers food shortages. But KEPCO, South Korean state power company, reported that power was restored to 99 per cent of them by early Sunday.

The safety ministry said the storm was moving north at 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour as of 10 p.m. Saturday while passing over North Korea.
