US Open Men's Final Tips: Medvedev capable of competing against Nadal”

When told that Berrettini described him as "a beast, a machine", Nadal smiled and said: "I just hope to be like this on Sunday".

Rafael Nadal will play for his 19th Grand Slam title, one shy of Roger Federer's all-time men's record, after battling past Italy's Matteo Berrettini on Friday and into his fifth US Open final.

Nadal, who made the semi-finals at all four Slams for the first season since 2008, captured his 12th French Open title in June, lost the Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic and fell to Federer in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

"Sunday is just one more chance, that's all". I need to hold this level if I want to have chances on Sunday. They've played each other once before, the final of the Montreal Masters hard-court tournament in August, and Nadal won 6-3, 6-0.

World number two Nadal sees it as a simple matter of enjoying what you have achieved and not coveting someone else's accomplishments. "He is the player that's playing on tour this summer", Nadal said. Since the end of July, he has played 24 matches on hard courts (winning all but two of them) and the success has not slowed.

Nadal, who won his 18th Grand Slam with a 12th title at Roland Garros in June, was already considered one of the favourites in NY from the start of tournament, along with Djokovic and Federer.

"Finally I'm here after three sets", Medvedev said.

During his on-court interview, Medvedev referenced his "tournament of controversies", which included accumulating $US19,000 in fines and antagonising booing fans last week, saying he knew it was "not going to be easy with the public".

In contrast to the likes of Aussie bad boy Nick Kyrgios, Medvedev does not appear keen for the "villain" tag to stick, and the Russian even declared he "loves the USA" after beating Dimitrov.

Safin's words are in stark contrast to Tim Henman's, with the former British No 1 believing Medvedev will be lucky to win a single set against Nadal in the US Open final.

NADAL POWERS THROUGH In the second semifinal, Nadal, the three-time US Open victor, punched 37 winners to claim a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-1 win in 2 hours and 35-minutes over first-time major semifinalist Italy's Matteo Berrettini. Medvedev was sloppy with his first serve and had a lot of unforced errors, things Nadal will capitalize on and create distance in the scoreboard.

"If I able to win on Sunday, OK, will be incredible", Nadal said. "Of course, helps little bit", Nadal said. "You don't want to be in a tie-breaker against a player like Matteo after you have missed all those opportunities".

Serving better and playing more aggressively, Nadal has raced into the US Open final for the loss of only one set. The No. 2 seed hasn't played anyone seeded higher than 20th, but now faces the No. 5 seed who is one of the hottest players in men's tennis. Courtesy the win, Nadal claimed his fifth title in Canada.

"The confidence means a lot in this case because I do think he was better player in first set".

"I feel like it's going to be my thing", Medvedev said. I will always work to be better. "We had some awesome level".

Daniil Medvedev is coming off a straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 32 games to decide. Medvedev broke for a 3-1 lead in the third set and held to the finish.

Medvedev is unlikely to be as charitable as Berrettini, having played the key points excellently in his straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov, but the early signs from the Italian promised a hard evening for Nadal.

Djokovic, victor in four of the previous five Slams, went out in the US Open fourth round to three-time Slam victor Stan Wawrinka, a left shoulder injury forcing the Serbian star to retire.
