Volkswagen rebrands and wheels out its new mass-market car”

The ID.3 is intended as the first in a planned onslaught of electric vehicles that the carmaker hopes will finally gain forgiveness from the public for the 2015 Dieselgate scandal, which saw the brand's reputation irreparably tarnished and its stock plummet.

Hot on the heels of last night's big debut, the 2020 Volkswagen ID.3 is being featured in a series of videos putting the spotlight on what the company argues is its third most important auto after the Beetle and Golf.

Volkswagen will initially launch the ID.3 1st Edition in three fixed configurations - base, ID.3 1st Plus and ID.3 1st Max. The batteries have been positioned at the floor, between the front and rear wheels, keeping the centre of gravity low and having optimum weight distribution.

As with other recent battery-car entries, the use of a skateboard-like platform frees up space for passengers and cargo. As GoAuto has reported, the ID.3 and other EVs from Volkswagen have been pushed back to 2022 at the earliest for this market due to the lack of incentives and other support from governments for such eco-friendly vehicles here.

The new VW ID.3 will be the first dedicated electric vehicle that enters series-production, as well as the first model built on the new modular MEB platform that's designed specifically for electric vehicles.

But the ID.3 is the first production vehicle to use the new technology.

It's rarely a case when an automaker correctly uses the term "all-new", but the ID.3 was truly developed from the ground up.

The designers have kept the layout as simple as possible, with most functions such as the audio system and air control operated via the freestanding 10-inch dash-mounted screen or by steering wheel buttons or voice control. "The natural style and absolutely intuitive driver experience demonstrate a new, electric way of thinking".

Volkswagen ID.4 Near Production Prototype

Top speed for 45kWh and 58kWh versions is locked at 160kmph. This will have a 150kW motor with 310Nm of torque. The special first-edition ID 3, the ID 3 1ST, will come with the middle battery pack and more standard features-at a price of $44,200 (44,000 euros).

There will be a 100kWh fast charger on offer as well, which can charge the batteries of the ID.3 to provide a 290km range in just 30 minutes! Range-topping variants will be able to charge at 125 kW.

The batteries will be covered by an eight-year, 160,000km warranty in Europe.

With the basic variant coming onto the United Kingdom market at under £27,000, it is set to become one of the first genuinely affordable electric vehicles on offer.

The ID.3 1 Plus additionally features a rear view camera system, ACC Adaptive Cruise Control and the Kessy Advanced keyless access locking and starting system. There's also an optional, augmented-reality, or AR, head-up display system.

It will be available with three battery-range options.

The Volkswagen ID 3 will enter production later this year but will not be sold in the U.S.

The VW Group splurge on EVs this year includes the second-generation e-Up, the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron.
