Cavaliers play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod dead at 67

Cavaliers play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod dead at 67”

The team's statement did not mention a cause of death.

A popular play-by-play man because of his fervor and his rapport with commentator and former Cavs guard Austin Carr, McLeod did play-by play of the Cavs for 15 years following a long stint with the Pistons.

The longtime sportscaster and announcer, who called Cleveland's National Basketball Association championship in 2016 and told his cameraman to keep rolling when Stanford's band was on the field in 1982, died Monday. "He was a true, heart-felt ambassador for the team, fans and entire greater Cleveland community".

Fred was born and grew up in nearby Strongsville, Ohio. In the video, McLeod's passion for the team and skill as an announcer are both on full display.

He began his broadcasting career in 1974, working in Missouri and Steubenville, Ohio before getting a job here at WJKW-TV 8 in the 1970s as a weekend sports anchor. The late announcer called games for a total of 36 seasons and also spent 22 seasons announcing Pistons games prior to returning to his home state in 2006. While calling the action for his hometown team, he has since coined many signature calls like "Right down Euclid!"

McLeod also spent time during his career calling Major League Baseball games for the Indians and the Detroit Tigers, as well as the NFL's Lions.

In an interview with NBA.com, Fred says his goal for each broadcast was to make people smile or laugh.

The Cavaliers extended their "deepest condolences" to McLeod's friends and family in a statement on their website.
