Corbyn attacks PM over 'reckless' no-deal Brexit

Corbyn attacks PM over 'reckless' no-deal Brexit”

Britain's main opposition Labour Party should campaign against Brexit and push for a referendum to reverse its planned departure from the European Union before any election, deputy party chief Tom Watson, is due to say on Wednesday (Sept 11).

Britain is scheduled to leave the bloc October 31, although legislation passed last week by opposition MPs seeks to force the prime minister to ask Brussels for an extension to the Brexit process if no exit deal can be reached.

The setbacks suffered by the government over the past week also included a rebellion by 21 Tory MPs, who voted in favour of the bill blocking a no-deal Brexit and were subsequently deselected by the party, meaning they are unable to stand as Conservative candidates in the next general election. But we won't allow Johnson to dictate the terms.

In a speech on Wednesday in London, Mr Watson will say a single-issue Brexit election may not break the deadlock in Parliament - something only a second referendum can achieve with certainty.

"The next Labour government will bring about the biggest extension of rights for workers that our country has ever seen".

"Our priority is, first, to stop no deal, and then to trigger a general election", Corbyn is expected to say. "I agree with Jeremy Corbyn we should get the best possible deal and then ask the electorate to choose between that and Remain". As the Prime Minister's top adviser reportedly said, the negotiations are "a sham".

"There's a real irony about this of course because in the referendum a lot of people said they voted leave because they wanted to take back control to the Westminster parliament".

Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson sits in the back of a car as he leaves parliament in London Monday Sept. 9 2019. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson voiced optimism Monday that a new Brexit deal can be reached so Britain leaves the European Uni

"Labour accepts the referendum result as the voice of the majority".

Labour said all opposition leader who met with Jeremy Corbyn's on Monday had "agreed to work together to hold the Government to account in Parliament". The party's leadership has insisted it is eager for an election after the risk of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October has been ruled out.

Likewise, he noted that the Conservative Party would use a hard Brexit as an excuse to sell-off public services, do away with regulations that protect the United Kingdom population and strip workers of their rights.

By contrast to Watson's claim, party strategists believe the most ardent remain voters will be all but impossible to win back - but hope they can offer a pragmatic way out of the current crisis for both leavers and remainers.

Some members of the shadow cabinet, including Emily Thornberry and John McDonnell, have already made clear they would campaign to remain in a referendum, whatever deal Labour was able to secure from the EU27.

Parliament will vote Monday evening on whether to hold a general election, before being suspended for five weeks into mid-October.

With only seven weeks until Britain is due to quit the European Union, the future of Brexit is as unclear as ever, with the possible outcomes ranging from the world's fifth largest economy leaving without a deal to the 2016 referendum being overturned.
