Couple face charges after splurging R1.5m accidentally deposited into account

Couple face charges after splurging R1.5m accidentally deposited into account”

State police say the Montoursville couple spent almost all of the money in just over two weeks.

The couple dropped most of their "found" money on a race vehicle, a camper, two four-wheelers, a auto trailer and a new SUV, according to court documents obtained by local station WNEP.

Pennsylvania pair Robert and Tiffany Williams are said to have splashed out on a Chevy, a camper ran and a race vehicle as well as giving $15,000 to friends in need - all without checking with their bank about the error. One fine morning, an amount of 120,000$ (INR 85,00,000) was deposited in the BB&T bank account of Robert and Tiffany Williams, reports ABC News. The lender then contacted Tiffany Williams on June 20 to tell her she had to repay the Sh13.7 million - Sh11 million - in overdraft fees they had incurred.

Before the funds had mistakenly been deposited, the couple had $1,121 in their account, the complaint noted.

Robert and Tiffany Williams, of Montoursville, made their first court appearance after being arrested and charged with four felony counts of theft.

At issue is that the money transferred into their BB&T account did not belong to them and now they are facing charges of theft.

Brown said Tiffany told the bank: "She no longer had the funds because she had already paid off bills". Rather than contacting the bank and reporting the error, the couple did what many people would undoubtedly be at least tempted to do: They went on a spending spree.

"That is kind of shocking, with all the procedures the banks have set up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking, there's no way anybody gets away with that stuff", Nate Weaver, a neighbour of the Williamses, told WNEP.

"I have no idea, I don't even know what's going on", he said. They looked in courtroom remaining week and posted bail of US$25,000 each. "She said she would speak to her husband and attempt to construct a repayment agreement" with the bank, Brown said.

As it turned out, a teller at the couple's bank had accidentally deposited the $120,000 in the couple's account on May 31 when it should have gone to Dimension Covington Investment, LLC.
