MPs should secure a referendum before an election, says Watson

Sir Oliver Letwin, who lost the Tory whip for defying Downing Street over Brexit, suggested Mr Johnson could change tack.

Parliament will vote Monday evening on whether to hold a general election, before being suspended for five weeks into mid-October.

Corbyn said a general election is coming, but the Labour Party won't let U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson "dictate the terms".

"If there is still a majority for Brexit, what do they have to fear?" he will add. We're ready to unleash the biggest people-powered campaign we've ever seen. "And they are increasingly despairing seeing what's going on in Parliament and the role that the Labour Party is playing, and the fact the Labour Party won't even have an election, frankly they're scratching their heads and wondering what is going on and what is the Labour Party for?"

"Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will deliver Brexit by 31 October, no ifs or buts, so we can move on and focus on the issues that matter to people", said its party chair James Cleverly.

Although the debate ended without a vote and was not attended by the Prime Minister it was targeting, the session had been called by Labour MPs alarmed at the possibility the Prime Minister might find a way around a law they had passed to ban a full Brexit, forcing the nation to delay its withdrawal from the European Union once again.

His stance contrasts with Jeremy Corbyn's insistence on Tuesday that any referendum must include a "credible leave option", leaving the door open for Brexit voters to support Labour.

Tories are hijacking the referendum result to help "the rich".

In a bombshell intervention deepening Labour's civil war over Europe, the deputy leader will today claim the 2016 vote was too long ago to be valid, and that a single-issue election would not break the Brexit deadlock. "Just as we worked throughout the summer to pass a law preventing no deal, so we will work each and every day we are shut down to enforce that law".

Answering his critics as he spoke, who insisted that he should no longer sit among other left-wingers because of his criticism of Jeremy Corbyn, Austin shot back: "I left the labour party to shine a spotlight on the disgrace it has become under his leadership, and because I regard myself as proper, decent traditional labour, not like the extremists who have taken over this party and are dragging it in the mud".

There was disquiet among some around Corbyn that the chaotic events of the past week in parliament risked allowing Johnson to present the Labour leader as part of a Westminster cabal, trying to block Brexit. "Once we get out of here, there isn't any way to establishment-up Jeremy", one Labour source said.

He will say: "The only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum".

He also accused the PM of cosying up to President Donald Trump to get a "one-sided" trade deal with the United States which would damage employment rights, the NHS and UK industry.

Some members of the shadow cabinet, including Emily Thornberry and John McDonnell, have already made clear they would campaign to remain in a referendum, whatever deal Labour was able to secure from the EU27.
