Novak Djokovic's classy gesture after Rafael Nadal's US Open triumph”

Medvedev arrived at his first Grand Slam final as the hottest player in men's tennis, riding the momentum from reaching four consecutive finals, but it was not quite enough to carry him to a maiden major title. Over the last three years, however, Nadal has five Slams to his name as against Djokovic's four and Federer's three.

Daniil Medvedev said the energy of the NY crowd helped instigate his stunning fightback that saw him fall just short against Rafael Nadal in Sunday's U.S. Open final. The record of 16 Grand Slams - then thought to be nearly insurmountable - would be the lowest in the list among active players.

The Spaniard scooped his 19th major tournament win at the US Open.

After his latest Grand Slam win at the US Open, Rafael Nadal was given the silent treatment by most Barcelona-based newspapers who chose not to appraise the Spaniard, despite his most recent incredible victory.

Nadal hasn't been this close in the "standings" since the "score" was Federer 1, Nadal 0, after Wimbledon in 2003.

The tennis great bristled at the suggestion that he might have played a role in some favourable scheduling.

The same could be said for Nadal, but on balance, he was more in his element after all the marathon five-setters he has played in over the last 15 years.

Others would point out that Nadal's edge in their head-to-head series, which now stands at 24-16, should give him the nod. He was the better one.

At that moment, Medvedev would joke afterward, this is where his thoughts were: "OK, in 20 minutes I have to give a speech".

"The three of us are doing things that never were done in the history of tennis", Nadal said. Because Nadal's constant battles with injuries often made his Slams most likely to be Roland Garros but the dominance of Djokovic and Federer across the other surfaces looked like he would be held at bay.

Asked who is the greatest ever, Toni replied: "It's hard to say because many things need to be considered now". I need to think about my career in a different way.

It would take a very respectable and likeable Spaniard to sufficiently takeover the legacy left by Perez, but they don't get much more likeable than the four-time US Open victor.

Federer, dealing with a bad back, bowed out in five sets in the quarter-finals.

But it was not to be after Nadal picked up his fifth major after turning 30.

"The way you are playing is a big joke".

"I can say that I'm sure all of us, we're fighting our best to try to make this transition", he said.

"But the Russians are good at making coats, not playing tennis", he added, referring to Nadal's Russian opponent.

"I've got to work tomorrow, I have to run", he said. A game Medvedev, from Russian Federation, came back from being down two sets to win the third and fourth and force a fifth. Even every game, to win, is tough.

In the meantime, Federer vs. Nadal vs. Djokovic provides plenty to talk about.
