A "Towards Zero Suicide" initiative has recently been introduced in all HSC Trusts, with a focus on patient safety in adult mental health.

The average suicide rate in Germany was about 9 out of 100,000 people. Rates varied widely, however, between countries, from 5 suicide deaths per 100 000, to more than 30 per 100 000.

From 2010 to 2016, the global suicide rate fell by almost 10% to 10.5 per 100,000 people.

According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds around the world and that 79 per cent of global suicides occur in low and middle-income countries.

In the United Kingdom, new figures from the Office for National Statistics highlighted that the rate of suicide has hit a 16-year high following half a decade of decline. Key interventions that have shown success in reducing the number of suicides are restricting access to means, educating the media on responsible reporting of suicide, implementing programs among young people to build life skills that enable them to cope with life stresses, and early identification, management and follow-up of people at risk of suicide, the World Health Organization recommended. The need to create facilitated referral pathways and understand more about restricting access to means was recognised.

The Downtown Mission is also highlighting its suicide prevention efforts spearheaded by its distress centre program, which has been in Windsor since 1968 and became part of the mission's services in January 2016.
