Oregon officials confirm 2nd case of vaping-related illness”

More than 450 potential cases have been reported in almost three dozen states, according to the CDC, which is working with the FDA, state, and local health officials to investigate the condition.

There have been occasional reports of similar illnesses, including one from 2000 that was tied to inhaling homemade marijuana-infused oil vapor.

Since then, five more people across the country have died from this lung illness related to vaping as of September 10, according to CNN.

Numerous reported illnesses involved vaping devices - including cannabis products - that contain vitamin E acetate, an oil derived from vitamin E that can be unsafe if inhaled.

"Most vaping products contain nicotine, the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products". "Candy-flavored liquids and intentional marketing tactics are clearly being used to attract and addict young people to vaping". There have not yet been similar illnesses seen in Canada, according to Health Canada. The chemical has been found in samples of cannabis concentrate vaping products used by some with the illness, the Post reported the FDA as saying.

It was found that most of the patients were male with a median age of 19, in a study conducted by the states of Wisconsin and IL and published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Doctors say the illnesses resemble an inhalation injury, with the body apparently reacting to a caustic substance. "It's causing inflammation in your lungs; therefore, you're more susceptible to getting illnesses like the flu". Most of the patients say they vaped products containing THC, the high-producing ingredient in marijuana.

Then the fact that the concentrates are heated is another complication. Instead, they suspect chemical exposure. That brings in the devices, a third factor to consider.

Patients have had symptoms that include cough, shortness of breath and/or chest pain that has grown worse over a period of days or weeks before admission to the hospital. We're watching this very closely. If you now use e-cigarettes or vapes, consider not using them for the time being.

"If you or a loved one is vaping, please stop".

Inappropriately administered substances, adulterated or contaminated products appeared highly likely.

"(If) they still have the products - we don't care if they're legal, illegal, or if they were made in their basement, we really don't care - we just would like to get it so we can send it off for testing", Pryde said.

"Our sympathies go out to the family of the person who died", Governor Laura Kelly said.

He said millions of people are vaping, and while the idea of vaping has been traditionally marketed as a "safer" alternative to cigarette smoking, we're seeing now, that this isn't true.

"Let common sense be your guide".
