Rory McIlroy named PGA Tour Player of the Year

Rory McIlroy named PGA Tour Player of the Year”

Rory McIlroy has been voted PGA Tour player of the year over Brooks Koepka after posting the most top-10 finishes and winning the FedEx Cup.

Any golfer who competed in at least 15 FedExCup events was eligible to vote for the award.

A victor in 2016, McIlroy became the second player to win multiple FedExCups, following Tiger Woods, and the first player to win it along with The Players Championship in the same season.

McIlroy beat out Brooks Koepka - the PGA Championship victor - in the player vote despite not winning a major championship on the season.

"You know, I think players don't just feel that four weeks a year is important", McIlroy said. That year, Nick Faldo won PGA Player of the Year while Wayne Levi won PGA Tour Player of the Year.

After playing exclusively in the United States until July, skipping the Irish Open at Lahinch, McIlroy racked up 14 top-10 finishes in the USA and vowed to repeat his US-based schedule in 2020 before admitting that with a May 28-31 date likely for the Irish Open in 2020, he'd "definitely" play if such a move is confirmed. "I am very honoured that they thought enough of my season to give me this award". He was runner-up in two majors and tied for fourth in the other. "I thought maybe Brooks winning the PGA Championship this year was going to be the difference-maker, but the other players thought differently".

When asked if he would rather have a year like 2019 or 2014 - when he won consecutive majors at the British Open and PGA Championship, sandwiched around his win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational - McIlroy took a few moments before replying.

Sung-jae Im, the only rookie who qualified for the Tour Championship, was voted PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

The Tour also announced on Wednesday that 21-year-old South Korean Sungjae Im was voted the 2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.
