Billy Porter Makes History With First Emmys Win

Billy Porter Makes History With First Emmys Win”

Billy Porter's historic win as the first openly gay black man to take home an Emmy in an outstanding lead actor category was matched with an equally historic speech.

And the category, a jubilant Billy Porter said as he made Emmys history, "is love, y'all, love".

The actor was up against a stacked list of nominees, including Jason Bateman for Ozark, Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us, Kit Harington for Game of Thrones, Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul and Milo Ventimiglia for This Is Us.

He quoted James Baldwin, saying: "It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I'd been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here".

"Let me make this clear right now in this room to everybody".

He also thanked his show's co-creator, Ryan Murphy: "Ryan Murphy, you saw me!"

After thanking his friends, colleagues and loved ones, Porter concluded: "We, as artists, are the people who that get to change the molecular structure of the hearts and minds of the people who live on this planet. And as you did it, you reminded us that there is so much more that unites us than divides us", Biden wrote. "Please don't ever stop doing that". The actor previously won a Tony in 2013 for his role in Broadway's "Kinky Boots", and then a Grammy the following year for his work on the "Kinky Boots" cast recording - so now he's just an Oscar short of achieving EGOT status. I know I'm part of a generation that kicked the door down for these issues and for these stories to be told.
