Sid Haig, who acted in 'House of 1000 Corpses,' dies at 80”

"This got here as a shock to all of us".

Horror icon Sid Haig, best known for his role as Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" trilogy, has died at 80, TMZ reported.

Haig had a long-running career in film and as well as appearing in horrors like The Devil's Rejects, he also had a leading role on the television series Jason of Star Command, as the villain Dragos.

His first role in a UCLA student film helped catapult him into the spotlight and paved the way for an extensive acting career that garnered him a loyal cult following. He was also a versatile drummer, and signed a record contract right out of high school; the track he recorded with the T-Birds, Full House, reached #4 on the charts in 1958. Notably, he became close with director Jack Hill in the 1970s, appearing in films such as Foxy Brown and Coffy alongside blaxploitation star Pam Grier. He had completely given up on acting and now suddenly had found a whole new audience at the age of 60. This makes the actor's passing even more of a shock, but for what it's worth, it's a good thing he was able to see just how much he is loved by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans before he left this world. "I love you." Here's a look at that final Instagram photo from Susan L. Oberg.

His image as Captain Spaulding is remarkable in today's horror genre. Lionsgate was fine with me sort of sneaking him in one day to shoot as much as I could.

The exact circumstances of his death remain a mystery, but the outpouring of love from the horror community has been overwhelming - including from Rob Zombie himself, who shared a brief remembrance of his longtime collaborator.

Earlier this month, Haig was taken to hospital and moved to the intensive care unit following an accident, and she had previously told fans he "bounced back like a champ" and was "fighting like a warrior" before his tragic death. Because Sid, he's big and burly, and now he's tiny as a skeleton so I was like, oh, man. But for many others, Sid Haig was a shining example of how you could pave your own road and be a solid guy doing it. Sid Haig couldn't afford to be a diva; instead, he was a hard-working creative who had to bust his ass honing his craft.

"Neither of us knew he was creating a character that would live on and grow in popularity every year", Zombie wrote on Facebook. "Gone but not forgotten", Zombie wrote on Monday. "We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Sid".
