IPhone exploit could allow permanent jailbreak for millions of devices

IPhone exploit could allow permanent jailbreak for millions of devices”

A security researcher claims to have discovered an unpatchable hardware-based iPhone vulnerability, which affects models from the 4s to the iPhone X and can pave the way for a new wave of iOS "jailbreaking" and hacks to bypass the lockscreen. Since its a bootrom exploit, Apple can not fix it by rolling out a software update.

Most generations of iPhones and iPads are vulnerable: from iPhone 4S (A5 chip) to iPhone 8 and iPhone X (A11 chip). Furthermore, as per GitHub, users have been warned that the exploit could cause devices to brick.

However, since the exploit operates at the bootrom level (the code an iPhone initially runs at startup before iOS begins loading), it's likely checkm8 could be a permanent avenue for jailbreak and other processes that run unofficial code.

Axi0mX also notes that his exploit cannot be performed remotely. However, they're reporting that for now, the exploit can only lead to a "tethered jailbreak", meaning you'll have to connect your iPhone to a PC or Mac whenever it goes through a reboot. It is unknown whether a follow-up version would evolve in a way that would not require physical access to the device, in which case millions of iPhones would be affected.

The days of jailbreaking are long gone - or so we thought.

"This is possibly the biggest news in the iOS jailbreak community in years".

The Checkm8 vulnerability was published by a security researcher called AxiomX who explained to ZDNet that he had worked on the jailbreak all year. The last time a significant iOS bootrom exploit was released to the public was way back in 2010 on the iPhone 4.
