Iceberg the size of Sydney breaks off from east Antarctica

Iceberg the size of Sydney breaks off from east Antarctica”

Formed a D28 on the East coast of Antarctica in the area that has the name emery and from which icebergs break off fairly regularly.

That distinction belongs to iceberg B15, a 4,200-square mile behemoth which broke away from Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf in 2000, also in a calving event.

Fricker said: "It's part of the ice shelf's normal cycle, where we see major calving events every 60-70 years". The iceberg, known as iceberg D28, covers an area of 632 square miles.

The iceberg, officially called D-28, separated from the front of the ice shelf, which scientists had been monitoring closely since the early 2000s, according to AAD, an Australian government agency.

Prof Fricker had predicted back in 2002 that Loose Tooth would come off sometime between 2010 and 2015.

The Australian Antarctic Division has released incredible footage of the area where the iceberg left the coastline.

"It is the molar compared to a baby tooth", Prof Helen Fricker from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography told BBC News. "We knew it would happen eventually, but just to keep us all on our toes, it is not exactly where we expected it to be", she said.

"The calving will not directly affect sea level, because the ice shelf was already floating, much like an ice cube in a glass of water", Dr Galton-Fenzi said.

This is the second biggest calving event for the Amery Ice Shelf itself.

It's been more than 50 years since the last "major carving event" on the Amery ice shelf, which is the third-largest in Australia and located between two Australian research stations, the statement read.

The researchers say that surface water heated by the sun appears to be accelerating the melting of the Ross Ice Shelf, a huge slab of ice which juts into the ocean.

Scientists have not linked this event to climate change, but have concerns about the iceberg's travel path, the Daily Mail reveals.
