Woman dies from vaping-related illness as outbreak spreads”

The state on Friday proposed a six-month ban on vaping products, part of a six-point list of options for the governor's consideration for stemming the tide of vaping-related illnesses.

State health officials reported five new cases of vaping-related lung injury to the Centers for Disease Control on Monday, doubling the total number of case reported to the federal agency from MA as Gov. Charlie Baker's administration works to respond to the danger.

The state's Department of Health and Human Services said that the victim was 65-years-old and from the Douglas County area.

"This death underscores the potential dangers associated with vaping", acting state Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said in a statement Tuesday. Only one patient reported vaping only nicotine.

Nationwide, there were 805 confirmed and probable cases as of September 27, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The death in Nebraska occurred in May, according to Public Health Officials.

The state's department of public health has three epidemiologists and two pulmonologists sorting through the now 51 suspected cases in the state, including interviewing patients and collecting their medical records, according to Ann Scales, the department's spokesperson.

MA has gone the farthest, issuing a four-month ban on all vaping products - flavored or not.

Critics of the ban have called it overly broad, noting that federal health authorities looking into a wave of vaping-related illnesses have so far been focused on additives in black-market cartridges used to vape marijuana products. A health authority spokesman did not say if the three new cases did, too. Vaping THC and nicotine were reported in 40 percent of the cases.

Cigarette smoking is the country's leading cause of premature death. The vaping liquid is heated into a gas, typically by battery-operated metal coils, to be inhaled.

There are 805 lung injury cases reported from 46 states and 1 USA territory.

Although investigation into devices and products is ongoing, the CDC wants the public to consider not using e-cigarettes or vaping products-especially those containing THC. Anne Schuchat, CDC's principal deputy director, testified last week that most patients reported purchasing products from people they knew, rather than a store.

Many patients who got sick said they vaped both nicotine and THC, and about 16 percent said they vaped nicotine e-cigarettes exclusively.
