International Astronomical Union names asteroid after Pandit Jasraj”

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named an asteroid, discovered in 2006, after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj.

With the honour, the Padma Vibhushan-winning musician Pandit Jasraj has become the first musician from India to join the starry sky of immortal composers like Beethoven, Mozart and Pavarotti. Not only that, according to IAU guidelines, the discoverer is also supposed to write a short citation whereby they are required to give explanation to reasons as to why they are assigning the name. 1930) is an exponent of Indian classical vocal music. "His distinctive voice traverses a remarkable four-and-a-half octaves", reads an IAU citation available on the California Institute of Technology's database on small planetary bodies.

The International Astronomical Union named the asteroid discovered on Novermber 11, 2006 as 'Panditjasraj (300128).' The minor planet was discovered by Catalina Sky survey as their telescopes are primarily from Arizona, United States.

NASA defines asteroids - sometimes called minor planets - as rocky, airless remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
