ISRO performs 4rd lunar-bound orbit maneuver

ISRO performs 4rd lunar-bound orbit maneuver”

The orbiter component of the mission builds directly on the legacy of India's first moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, which carried the instrument that identified water ice buried in dark craters near the lunar south pole. "The orbit achieved is 119 km x 127 km". "Chandrayaan-2 will be the first spacecraft to land near the moon's South Pole and this is where NASA hopes to land an astronaut in about five years from now". Pragyan will use a ramp that Vikram will lay to roll down to the lunar surface. The name Pragyan translates to "wisdom" in Sanskrit.

Ankur, a resident of Ambassa in Dhalai district of Tripura and a student of class IX at Dolubari High School, is one among 60 in the country to have won the online space quiz conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) among school students of classes VIII, IX and X to increase awareness about India's space programmes.

The history-making machine will execute its next maneuver between 8:45am and 9:45am Indian time (3:15am-4:15am GMT) on Tuesday.

That dramatic moment will come on September 6 at about 4:25 p.m. EDT (2025 GMT) at the end of a 15-minute powered-descent phase, according to Spaceflight Now.

To watch the landing of Chandrayaan 2, sixty students have been selected across the country who will witness this great moment of the country along with PM Modi.

All the systems of Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter and Lander were healthy, ISRO said adding the health of the Orbiter and Lander was being monitored from the Mission Operations Complex at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) here with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at nearby Bylalu.

Fourth Lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was performed successfully today (August 30, 2019) at 1818 hrs IST.

The duration of the manoeuvre was 1155 seconds. The second orbit-lowering exercise is expected to place the lander on an orbit that will be as close as 36km from the lunar surface at the closest and 110km at the farthest.

On July 22, the Rs. 978-crore Chandrayaan-2 was launched into space by India's heavy-lift rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV Mk III) in a textbook style.
