Jay Gruden fired by Redskins after 0-5 start”

Seventeen years ago in Oakland, it was Callahan who replaced Jon Gruden, Jay's older brother, and led the Raiders to the Super Bowl, where they lost to Jon's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was under contract through 2020.

The Washington Redskins announced today that they have relieved Head Coach Jay Gruden of his duties with the team.

Gruden was in his sixth season as Redskins head coach.

Owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen informed Gruden he was out early Monday morning, a day after a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots.

The Redskins drafted quarterback Dwayne Haskins No. 15 overall in April and are expected to have a high pick in the 2020 National Football League draft.

While Redskins brass evidently believes it's time for a change, Gruden's reported firing apparently isn't going over too well with players.

Gruden's teams finished with winning records just twice: 9-7 in 2015, then 8-7-1 in 2016 and he took Washington to one playoff game, a loss. The only club that ranks worse than Washington in both categories are the Miami Dolphins, who are 0-4 and had a bye this week will host Washington next Sunday. The Redskins have been a total disaster this season and are cycling through quarterbacks.

Currently, the Redskins are in last place in the NFL East division, trailing the third-place New York Giants by two wins. The team went 7-9 in each of the past two seasons, leading to speculation about whether he would be back. The Cowboys and Eagles are now tied for the division lead, with both sitting at 3-2 on the season.

According to the statement by the Redskins, there will be a press conference at 1 p.m. from Redskins Park, the team's headquarters outside of Ashburn, Virginia.
