‘Addictive as cocaine:’ Parents sue Fortnite creators”

A class-action lawsuit over Fortnite addiction is going to be filed in Canada, alleging that the game has addictive properties comparable to cocaine and that Epic Games failed to properly warn parents about its addictive properties.

The firm are asking for other parents concerned that their children are similarly addicted to come forward, stating in their legal notice to Epic Games that players are receiving the chemical dopamine to the brain, and that vulnerable young people can become dependent on playing.

Chartrand went on to compare the lawsuit to the 2015 case in which the Quebec Superior Court ruled that tobacco companies weren't doing enough to warn customers about the dangers of the smoking, which ultimately led to a multi-billion dollar lawsuit.

The filing is on behalf of two plaintiffs-parents of Quebec children who are 10 and 15.

Jean-Philippe Caron, the lawyer spearheading the lawsuit, told AFP the game's creators enlisted the help of "psychologists to help make the game addictive".

Attorney Alessandra Esposito Chartrand, with Calex Legal, said the video game company intentionally made the game addictive, according to the CBC.

The World Health Organization recognized video game addiction as a health condition for the first time past year. If the class-action lawsuit is cleared, anyone who feels the same would also be able to join the complaint.

This case suggests that Epic has not disclosed the effects of the video game in the terms and conditions.

"They knowingly put on the market a very, very addictive game which was also geared toward youth".

Fortnite, released by US-based Epic Games in 2017, allows up to 100 players to fight individually or as part of a team to be the last standing on a virtual battlefield.
