Enable beaten by Waldgeist in Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

Enable beaten by Waldgeist in Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe”

Enable's third coronation was foiled as Waldgeist instead won back the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for France.

The thousands that made the journey from Britain to see Frankie Dettori and the undisputed star of Flat racing attempt to claim a place in the history books may have been left deflated as Waldgeist swooped to glory, but rarely will a loss have been greeted like a victory.

Whilst Enable's immediate future is undecided, it's expected that Waldgeist, a son of Galileo out of a Monsun mare, is likely to be retired following the Arc due to the significance of the victory. This is a "win and you're in" for the Breeders' Cup and I know that it is very close to the heart of Maria [Niarchos], the Breeders' Cup, so we will talk about that after the dust has settled here. Harrington said: "It is wonderful to win this race and I'm grateful to the Niarchos family for sending me these beautifully-bred yearlings - after the year we had last year with Alpha Centauri I didn't think I'd possibly have a year like this with the two-year-old fillies".

"Whether she has one more race or races next year is conjecture and speculation really". I think the ground has got a lot to do with it.

For a fleeting moment down the home straight it looked as though Enable would do it, as she swiftly put daylight between herself and the field but Gosden was always concerned the ground may have the impact it ultimately did.

"It's not what we all wanted, and the wave of goodwill we received before the race was overwhelming, but we have to accept these things in racing".

"I struggled early but she seemed to come good for me in the false straight".

He notched 100 winners for the first time in the 2013 season and won this year's Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot when Lord Glitters prevailed under Danny Tudhope.

Richard Hannon's filly had scored at 66-1 over course and distance a year ago, at the chief expense of Laurens in the Qipco 1000 Guineas.

Waldgeist swooped past easily to land the €3,150,000 ($3,456,340) prize at odds of 16-1.

Hannon said: "She never looked like getting beaten".

Newmarket has been the centre of the racing world for the thick stay of four centuries and for some distance of that time horses have been pounding up the extensive expanses of Warren Hill. "We were beaten by a better horse in the conditions". "She was slightly forgotten, but not any more".

He took his tally of Group One wins for the year to a new personal-best 17 when his and Gosden's Oaks heroine Anapurna led throughout in the newly-elevated Prix de Royallieu at ParisLongchamp.

Waldgeist upset as a 13-1 shot, paying $28.20, with Enable off as the odds-on favorite.

Instead, last year's runner-up Holdthasigreen took his Group One revenge on Call The Wind - with Dee Ex Bee only third in the two-and-a-half-mile marathon.

North Yorkshire trainer David O'Meara registered his 1,000th success when Betsey Trotter won at Wolverhampton on Saturday evening.
