Google's making it easier to move multimedia between smart speakers

Google's making it easier to move multimedia between smart speakers”

If you've ever started watching a video on YouTube on a Google Assistant-powered smart display but then wished you could transfer it to your TV, stream transfer should do the trick. Even though it is easy to stream music, videos and podcasts to these devices, it is quite hard to control the media when users move from room to room.

Move your music with the Google Assistant: Start playing music on the Google Home Mini in your kitchen, and keep the vibe going in the living room.

Google is adding voice control to move music and video between Google Home, Nest Hub, and Chromecast devices, with stream transfer being pushed out as an update from today.

Google have also made it possible to move video from one compatible device to another - something that will become more valuable as more smart displays and Android TVs end up in houses around the world.

Already it's been possible to remotely control playback on a Chromecast-equipped TV through issuing a voice command to a Google-powered smart speaker. In a new update Tuesday, Google announced that its digital assistant can now move music between Home and Nest smart speakers.

You can use Stream transfer with all the audio apps that are now compatible with Google Assistant such as YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora, and others. If you happen to be watching a YouTube video on a Nest Home, but want to move it to the big screen TV in the living room (so long as it supports Cast and is recognized in your Google Home account), just say, "Hey Google, play it on living room TV".

Those with a smart display can also move content to a different device using the touchscreen.

Initially, Google says, stream transfer will be compatible with popular audio apps like YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora, and others. Lastly, stream transfer allows you to organize multiple speakers into a single group. On the video side, however, the feature is also now limited to regular YouTube videos and does not work with YouTube TV or other video services. For video, meanwhile, it looks like YouTube will be the only supported service at launch. And earlier this summer, the company accidentally enabled Stream Transfer for a few users, which got promptly celebrated on Reddit.
