More dead wild elephants found at Thai waterfall; toll at 11

More dead wild elephants found at Thai waterfall; toll at 11”

The elephants are believed to have plunged to their deaths while trying to rescue a baby elephant who had fallen in.

Another five elephant carcasses have been discovered downstream from a waterfall where the bodies of six others were found on the weekend.

Sompote said that the death toll of 11 is the highest number of elephants to die in a single incident in Khao Yai.

The additional five were spotted by drone near the notorious fall known as Haew Narok (Hell's Fall).

"Probably, one of the smaller elephants might have slid and the adult ones were trying to rescue them but instead, were swept away by the water".

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation's notice said the waterfall had been temporarily closed to tourists so officials can treat the surviving elephants and remove the bodies of the others. When they arrived to investigate, as Richard C. Paddock and Muktita Suhartono of the New York Times report, the rangers discovered a grim scene: six dead elephants, seemingly killed by a raging waterfall known as Haew Narok-or "Hell's Abyss".

Officials left the elephants large amounts of bananas, in an effort to help them restore their energy.

But experts warn their long-term survival may be hard as elephants rely on large herds for protection and finding food.

The national park had previously erected fencing around Samor Poon Creek near the waterfall, but "it was not sufficient in this case", Paddock and Suhartono write.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa has ordered the construction of a barricade to prevent wildlife from falling into the waterfall, which has a history of such incidents. Eight elephants died at the same waterfall nearly 30 years ago.

Around 7,000 Asian elephants remain in Thailand, but around half of those living in captivity.
