Spread of NZ measles cases to US confirmed

Spread of NZ measles cases to US confirmed”

'Both jurisdictions have since passed two incubation periods for measles with no additional reported cases associated with these outbreaks as of Oc.

All the cases reported this year were those of "wild-type D8 or B3" measles and the majority of the infected individuals had not been vaccinated.

National's associate health spokesperson, Shane Reti, said the numbers showed the seriousness of the outbreak.

"Associate Health Minister Julie Anne Genter needs to let the public know when all New Zealanders will be able to be vaccinated and reinstate health targets".

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that between January and July of 2019, there were nearly 365,000 reported cases of measles worldwide, which is the most since 2006.

The CDC report showed China and India each exported one case to the United States, while Australia exported none.

"This past year's outbreak was an alarming reminder about the dangers of vaccine hesitancy and misinformation", said HHS Secretary Alex Azar after New York State Department of Health announced the end of the outbreak in the Rockland County.

Hotez added that he expects the United States to "hit peak measles transmission season" in the first and second quarter of next year. Although measles cases in Canada are far below those in the US, there was an increase observed between 2018 and 2019. CDC said most of these cases were among unvaccinated children in Orthodox Jewish communities.

The HHS press release says that four countries have lost their measles elimination status in the past year: the U.K., Greece, Venezuela and Brazil.

Genter rejected the claim the targets had been gotten rid of, noting that target data was still collected. Having a functional health system does.

This is a 75 per cent increase in the amount of vaccines administered when compared to the previous year, the statement said.

Had the USA lost their measles elimination status, it wouldn't have meant that any funds to immunization or public health would've been taken away, but the CDC emphasized on their website that attaining elimination status in the first place was a historic achievement.

However, Nancy Messonnier, director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, in August warned there was a "reasonable chance" World Health Organization would rescind the United States' designation as a country that has eliminated measles if an outbreak in NY continued beyond September 30 of this year.

There were three small outbreaks in January and February.

THE Department of Health has confirmed 17 measles cases in the Perth metropolitan area, narrowing the pool to those who flew into Perth from New Zealand. In mid-September, the worst week for infections this year, a full 165 people were infected.

For example, one of the newly reported cases involves a patient who returned to Rockland County from a trip overseas.
