Typhoon could leave Ireland on brink of World Cup elimination

Typhoon could leave Ireland on brink of World Cup elimination”

A powerful typhoon that organisers have warned could impact the final weekend of the Rugby World Cup pool stage has changed course, leaving forecasters and pundits wondering which games might be affected and who could benefit.

Townsend said Hagibis would likely have little effect on the match against Russian Federation, but it could have an impact on their game in Yokohama and possibly Ireland's match with Samoa in Fukuoka on Saturday.

World Rugby officials may be keeping an eye on Typhoon Hagibis as it develops south of Japan over the next few days.

According to the latest modelling from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Super Typhoon Hagibis is now projected to clip southeastern Japan, near Tokyo and Yokohama.

Ireland will train in Fukuoka tomorrow morning as planned and haven't yet been hit with any disruptions.

Should the fixture be called off it will be registered as a scoreless draw which would leave Ireland second in the Pool on 13 points but crucially within reach of Scotland, who have five points but have two matches to play.

In the case of the England-France game, this would send Eddie Jones's side through as Pool C champions and a quarter-final meeting likely against old rivals Australia.

"We just get on with our day job and try and prepare as best we can every single day".

Ireland's defence coach Andy Farrell said World Rugby is as "keen as we are to get this game played", the BBC reports.

This is a significant change from Monday's forecast when the storm was expected to make landfall in Japan's far southwest.

"We are now monitoring the development of a typhoon off the south coast of Japan in partnership with our weather information experts", said a World Rugby spokesman.

But the rules now state that any games cancelled at the World Cup due to weather problems are registered as scoreless draws. We've had some updates in the past from World Rugby about potential weather stuff and we will deal with that when it comes.

"But listen, we have to win our next two games to qualify".

"We are monitoring Typhoon Hagibis, which is now developing off the south coast of Japan".

"It is still too early to determine what, if any, impact there will be on match or training activities", said a World Rugby spokesman.
