U.S. fighter jet crashes in Germany, pilot survives”

A U.S. Air Force F-16CM/DM Fighting Falcon fighter jet, assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Wing, at Spangdahlem, crashed over a forest near Zemmer in Western Germany.

Public broadcaster SWR reported earlier that the crash had happened near the city of Trier, not far from Rammstein, a major US airbase in Germany.

The fighter jet crashed at about 3 p.m. local time near Zemmer, south of the base. She provided no immediate details about the cause of the crash.

The US Air Base Spangdahlem announced the crash in a statement.

A spokesman for the nearby United States military airbase at Spangdahlem told AFP he had no further information about the crash, its causes or the health of the pilot.

Just last month, an F-16 jet of the Belgian air force crashed in western France, with both pilots successfully ejecting but one spending two hours hanging from a power line before being cut down, officials said.

Germany is no stranger to military aircraft crashes, including in its own shortage-plagued Bundeswehr armed forces. One of the two pilots survived and the other one was killed.
