Windows 10’s Printer Fix Update Causes More Bugs

Windows 10’s Printer Fix Update Causes More Bugs”

Windows 10 1803 will reach end of support on November 12th, 2019, which means they will no longer receive security updates and will be vulnerable to any new security threats that are discovered. While the idea of patches is to solve problems and squash bugs, over recent months Microsoft has been solving one problem and causing many more. That's the case with the latest update that was rolled out on October 3 as a necessary release.

An attacker can also exploit these issues using an application or Microsoft Office document by embedding an ActiveX control marked "safe for initialization" that utilizes Internet Explorer rendering engine. Unfortunately for some Windows users, the October 3rd update appears to have broken the Start menu.

Microsoft is now not aware of any known issues with this update, but that doesn't mean that this update is completely safe to install. It is worth noting those who pull in KB4524147 now will have the reissued version without the issues.

"A reader told Bleeping Computer that these updates actually "*cause* printing problems where there were no printing problems previously", adding: "That is ironic because those updates are specifically supposed to solve printing problems".

Meanwhile, if that's not enough to boil the blood, the problems with the Start Menu, first encountered after the widely reported CPU/Cortana bug are back, with users now finding themselves getting "critical error" messages that can only be fixed by a reboot. However, that leaves the system open to the printer flaw.

Two of the critical vulnerabilities patched this month are remote code execution flaws in the VBScript engine, and both exist in the way VBScript handles objects in memory, allowing attackers to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user.
