Extinction Rebellion: Dublin activists block Irish parliament gates

Extinction Rebellion: Dublin activists block Irish parliament gates”

More than 130 people were arrested in London as protesters began setting up camps around the city, police said Monday, kicking off two weeks of demonstrations demanding action on climate change.

"But if you announce unsafe interventions in road traffic or things like this, of course that is just not on", he added.

Those protesting join activists across the world, including thousands in major European cities.

"In the United Kingdom, we will peacefully shut down all roads into Westminster in Central London and non-violently disrupt the government until our leaders agree to TAKE EMERGENCY ACTION NOW", the group says on its website.

In London, police arrested at least 20 people Monday as protesters have vowed to close down Parliament and Trafalgar Square.

On Tuesday, a Vancouver police spokesperson said the force had opted to deal with protesters in a different fashion than in other cities holding similar protests.

Protests are expected to spread across dozens of cities, including Delhi and NY, in the days and weeks ahead as activists call for urgent environmental action. Activists set up tents in Paris, occupying a major square and blocking traffic along a bridge near city hall.

Extinction Rebellion (XR for short) wants governments to declare a "climate and ecological emergency" and take immediate action to address climate change.

"Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has reportedly refused to produce evidence to support her claims that in recent protests, people have deliberately created lock-on devices that could harm police and emergency services attempting to remove them", lawyer Alice Drury said.

Among those arrested was 81-year-old Sarah Lasenby, a retired social worker from Oxford.

"It is imperative the government should take serious actions and put pressure on other states and global powers to radically reduce the use of fossil fuels", she told the Associated Press.

As we mentioned yesterday, this week marks the week of International Rebellion by activist group Extinction Rebellion and today they've climbed Montreal's Jacques-Cartier Bridge.

Meanwhile, fears activists would disrupt Sydney's rail network on Wednesday proved unfounded, following two days of demonstrations which saw some roads and traffic blocked.

The inbound lane of traffic was briefly closed, but has since reopened.

Earlier in London, police said some 135 climate activists were arrested.

The Paris event brought the area around Chatelet to a standstill.
