Malkin out longer-term, but won't miss season”

Sullivan announced that fellow centre Nick Bjugstad is also out longer-term, though Malkin is expected to miss more time of the two. Sullivan noted that Malkin will be out longer than Bjugstad.

Malkin's lower-body injury - his left knee buckled Saturday night after a collision with defenseman Kris Letang - will keep him from playing hockey for a while. Soon after, he was spotted limping down the runway at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh and didn't return for the third period. Bjugstad sustained his injury in the third.

Malkin was eager to bounce back this season after a down year in 2018-19. The Hart Trophy victor voted as NHL MVP in 2012 has 1,003 points (392 goals, 611 assists) in 854 NHL games, all with the Penguins, and won the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2015 and 2016.

Malkin, 33, has one goal through two games this season after posting 21 goals and 72 points in 68 games previous year.

With Penguins forward Bryan Rust, who scored 18 goals last season, on long-term injured reserve, Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford soon will have some salary cap space available.

Bjugstad, 27, has been held off the scoresheet this season for the Penguins.
