Mental-health stigma still entrenched in workplace

Mental-health stigma still entrenched in workplace”

Nearly a third (30%) of employers think mandatory reporting of workplace mental health statistics would help make organisations more accountable for staff wellbeing, a survey has found.

This was stated by Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Professor Dr Rizwan Taj here on Wednesday while talking to APP in an interview regarding World Mental Health Day, falling on October 10.

Among organisations that have yet to introduce mental health support, cost and resources are still the most common barriers.

"Our study confirms that stigma surrounding mental health not only exists in the workplace but is deeply rooted", said Jason Gorevic, chief executive officer at Teladoc Health, in a press release.

"It can be a lot easier for people to speak up when they are feeling physically ill or have a headache, but it can be much harder to tell someone when your mental health is suffering", Minister Wade said.

Gympass has created a specific mental health policy to help build a culture where staff feel comfortable and supported.

Make sure that your employees are aware that conversations about mental health will be kept confidential and would only ever be shared with a limited number of people in extreme circumstances, e.g. if you were concerned that they meant to harm themselves.

"The worst case is that someone struggling with their mental health could consider suicide".

Carol thinks the world of MVES and all that they have done for her. "But breaking down the stigma and encouraging people to talk, in a helpful, caring and supportive way, can make a difference".

He added: "The work that Barnardo's Scotland undertakes with children, young people and families can be emotionally draining". Given the average person now spends a third of their adult life at work, we all have a part to play in safeguarding physical and mental health at work. Some workplaces are even appointing mental health first aiders in their team who are the first point of call for employees who are struggling should they feel uncomfortable speaking to their manager.

"It's important that in all areas of our lives we are able to say we're not okay, especially in work".

Mental health initiatives continue to gain wide support from employers; the Time to Change pledge is a social movement operated by mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, and has been adopted by more than 1,175 employers to date.

"We've seen it firsthand with our own global workforce - employees want leaders to lead, to set the dialogue in motion around mental health and normalize the conversation", said Gorevic.
