US Astronauts Complete 1st Of 5 Power Upgrade Spacewalks”

Koch was due to take part in the landmark walk with Anne McClain back in March but NASA embarrassingly had to alter its plans due to "spacesuit availability" issues.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station carried their first of five spacewalks on Sunday, October 6, 2019 to replace some aging batteries.

The first all-female spacewalk is back on, six months after a suit-sizing flap led to an embarrassing cancellation. Koch conducted the six-hour mission with fellow astronaut Nick Hague.

Over the next seven hours and one minute, the pair worked to replace the stations current 400 lb (180 kg) nickel-hydrogen batteries with lithium-ion batteries that were located on the space station's port truss section. The first two will be with her crewmate Andrew Morgan on October 5 and October 11.

The astronauts were able to get a bit ahead for the next spacewalk have received approval to remove an additional nickel-hydrogen battery. NASA's spacesuits are not differentiated by sex but female astronauts tend to require smaller sizes than their male counterparts and only one medium sized suit was available when the walk was originally set to take place. But she noted that women are so integrated at all levels at NASA now that they don't tend to dwell on gender.

"I'm sure that they'll sit back and reflect on it, we'll all celebrate that", McArthur said. "We will all celebrate that", McArthur said. She will then venture out into the cold vacuum of space with Koch for the first all-female spacewalk on October 21 followed by her third spacewalk in the span of 10 days on October 25. They're also both making their first spaceflights.

Koch, who arrived on the ISS in March, is well on her way to setting a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman-surpassing Peggy Whitson.

On Friday, Sept. 4, 2019, NASA announced that the International Space Station's two women will pair up for a spacewalk on October 21 to plug in new batteries.

"I think it's important because of the historical nature of what we're doing", Koch said in an interview posted on the ISS Twitter page. "And it's wonderful to be contributing to the human spaceflight program at a time when all contributions are being accepted".

Flight Engineers Christina Koch and Andrew Morgan of NASA conducted their spacewalk at 2:40 p.m. EDT on September 6.

There are also five more spacewalks happening in December and November conducted by the U.S. in collaboration with Italy.
