British IS fighters taken into United States custody

British IS fighters taken into United States custody”

The two men, El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Amon Kotey, along with other British jihadis, allegedly made up the IS cell nicknamed "The Beatles" by surviving captives due to their English accents. "They have been moved out of Syria and are in a secure location".

Officials say they took El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Amon Kotey out of Syria to an undisclosed location.

He said the decision to remove them from Syria had been taken "in case the Kurds or Turkey lose control". The men said that their home country's revoking of their citizenship denies them a fair trial.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Mr Trump said the Kurds are still guarding numerous Islamic State group militants, but also said Turkey will be responsible for them.

"They are being held in military custody pursuant to the law of war".

"We are taking some of the most unsafe ISIS fighters out and we're putting them in different locations where it's secure", Trump said at the White House. "We've taken them out and we're putting them in different locations where it's secure".

On Wednesday, a USA official confirmed to ABC News that beginning Tuesday there had been some reductions in manning at some of the SDF-run prisons.

Turkey says it wants to create a "safe zone" on the border for numerous Syrian refugees on its territory.

Kotey, left, and Elsheikh, read a news article about themselves during an interview with The Associated Press at a security center in Kobani, Syria in 2018. Their detention set off a debate in the US and Europe over how to prosecute their citizens who joined IS.

Their cell is accused of abducting and decapitating around 20 hostages including American journalist James Foley, who was beheaded in 2012.

In March, Kurdish and USA forces cleared the last members of the Islamic State group from what was left of their self-declared caliphate, which once sprawled across a large part of Iraq and Syria. They were seized overnight, with lawyers predicting that their transfer to Iraq would be a precursor to them being taken to the United States.

About 30 to 50 USA troops were moved out of the way from two outposts in the border region.

A USA official told ABC News that the two detainees had been transferred from SDF control to an undisclosed "safe location". Attacks had taken place in the immediate vicinity, they said.

The SDF have been holding prisoner some 10,000 captured Islamic State group fighters, which includes around 2,000 of foreign nationality.

Trump and other US officials have repeatedly pressed other nations across Europe and the Middle East to take back the detainees from their countries. "Well, they're going to be escaping to Europe. They don't want those people out any more than we do", Mr Trump said.
