IS radical stabs ex-Indonesian army chief Wiranto”

An attacker allegedly "exposed to IS radicalism" stabbed Indonesian security minister Wiranto as he was stepping out of a vehicle today, leaving two deep wounds, police said.

Mr Prasetyo also said the attacker injured a police chief who was about to greet Wiranto as the Minister alighted from a auto, along with a villager.

"We are still investigating, but from our preliminary investigations we have found that the suspect is influenced by the radical teachings of ISIS", he said.

They were members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an extremist group responsible for deadly suicide bombings at churches in Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya a year ago, State Intelligence Agency chief Budi Gunawan told reporters in Jakarta.

Officers wrestled the suspect to the ground and an image supplied by police showed the suspect, who was wearing a black shirt and light pants, with his arms and legs secured.

Police have arrested a man and a woman, and are trying to determine their motive.

Police did not say if either suspect belonged to one of dozens of radical groups that have pledged loyalty to the Islamic State group in Indonesia, which has long struggled with Islamist militancy.

Thursday's incident comes just over a week before President Joko Widodo kicks off a second term as leader of the Southeast Asian archipelago of some 260 million people, the world's biggest Muslim majority nation.

The other three victims - a local police chief and two aides - had non-life threatening injuries, the hospital said.

Wiranto, the former chief of the armed forces and a failed presidential candidate, is a major figure in Indonesian politics. Wiranto denied any wrongdoing in East Timor.

"His condition is stable and at the moment he is being evacuated to a hospital in Jakarta", Tomsi Tohir, Banten police chief told Metro TV.
