Global donors pledge $14 bln to tackle AIDS - Macron”

"With these resources, we can step up the fight".

Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya who is in Lyon - France attending the Global Funds' 6th Replenishment Conference on behalf of President Edgar Lungu disclosed this when he met the Fund's Grants Manager Mark Erdington.

"Honored to convey President Paul Kagame's message to Global Fund, of his full commitment to the noble cause: saving lives through continuous efficient use of funding, reinforced primary healthcare and great collaboration among African countries", Dr. Gashumba wrote on her Twitter account.

He called specifically on Japan, Norway, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to "make more of an effort" to increase their contributions towards the fight. The US and France are the biggest donors.

President Macron chronicled the success stories of the Global Fund 17 years later since the Fund was setup.

Dr Tedros added: "The replenishment of the Global Fund is not just an investment in one organization or three diseases; it's an investment in our shared vision of a healthier, safer and fairer world". 68 billion over three years, about a third of the overall total.

The conference seeks to raise at least US$14 billion to help save 16 million lives and support affected countries and populations, avert US$234 million infections and support the world to get back on track to end HIV, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics.

This commitment is essential if these three pandemics are to be eliminated by 2030.

The donations from governments, philanthropic donors and the private sector will be used to finance health programs in more than 100 countries. Please try again later. It is fully committed to the Fund's governance and has contributed €4.61 billion (Sh527.4 billion) since the Fund was created in 2002, making it the second-largest contributor. But despite the progress made, challenges still need to be addressed because in 2018, 37.9 million people were HIV-positive and the number of new cases was again rising in about 50 countries.
