Sourav Ganguly to contest for president in BCCI elections”

The only factor working against former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly is that his tenure in whatever capacity he is elected will not last more than nine months since after nine months he would have completed six years at a stretch as an administrator of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly emerged as the consensus candidate to become Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s new President.

Ex-India batsman Brijesh Patel is likely to bag the position of IPL Chairman. Brajesh Patel, who was being backed by former BCCI President N. Srinivasan, was being lobbied to become the next president. However, there was stiff resistance against him. "We are happy Sourav is the new President", a senior official from North East affiliated unit said, reports News 18.

"Obviously, it's a great feeling as I have played for the country and captained the country", he said, according to PTI.

"We will speak to everyone first as we take a decision but my biggest priority will be to look after first class cricketers".

Ganguly, who represented India in 113 Tests and 311 ODIs, has more than 18,000 runs and 38 centuries to his credit in global cricket. "I have been requesting that to the CoA for three years". On Monday, he said it's a "great opportunity for me to do something good" and asked people to wait till 3 pm for the announcement. "That's the first thing I will do, look after the financial health of our first-class cricketers", Ganguly said.

While Ganguly's name is still doing the rounds for the position of President, it is believed that Jay and Brijesh could be slightly ahead in the race with the latter becoming the President and Jay taking on the role of Secretary.

"I didnt know I would be the President when I came down". Its image has got hampered quite a lot. You asked me and I told you it's Brijesh and when I went up and when I went up and I came to know it has changed.

October 14 is the last day set by the BCCI's electoral officer to receive names for the five office-bearers' posts, for which elections are scheduled on October 23. "I have never been in a BCCI election and I never knew it worked like this". It will be interesting to see who between Jay Shah and Arun Dhumal be the Secretary and who will be made the Treasurer.

"Whether you are elected unopposed or otherwise, it's a big responsibility because it is the biggest organisation in the world of cricket".

The choice for President's post was always between Ganguly and Patel and the former was finally accepted as an unanimous candidate.
