California becomes first USA state to ban animal fur products

California becomes first USA state to ban animal fur products”

"We've known from people who've gone undercover for years in the fur industry that it is impossible to be assured of humanely raised fur", said Assemblywoman Laura Friedman, D-Glendale (Los Angeles County), who carried the bill.

The law goes into effect on January 1, 2023.

"We are making a statement to the world that handsome wild animals like bears and tigers have no place on trapeze wires or jumping through flames", Newsom said.

The new fur law, which takes effect in 2023, was lauded by animal rights activists despite fervent opposition from the billion-dollar USA fur industry and threats of a lawsuit from the Fur Information Council of America.

According to reports, California is the first state in the ban early start times for middle and high school students.

Keith Kaplan from the Fur Information Council blasted the new law, saying it was part of a "radical vegan agenda", which would be using fur as "the first step to other bans on what we wear and eat".

Exempted are leather, cowhide and shearling, as well as fur products used for religious purposes.

"In yet another nod to pressure from activist groups, millions of California youth will no longer be able to experience the thrill of a circus performance featuring attractive, well cared for animals", the Southwest California Legislative Council said before the bill signing.

But, of course, you can't please everyone and those who work within the multi-billion-dollar fur industry have spoken out against the new rules.

The law includes penalties of up to $25,000 per day for each violation.

Anyone found breaking the no-fur law could be hit with a fine of $500 (£395) or, if they're found to be a repeat offender, up to $1,000 (£790).

Besides killing the fur trade, the legislation outlaws the use of animals in circus performances and will make it illegal to hunt and kill bobcats. "It is about the end of animal use of any kind".

"The signing of AB 44 underscores the point that today's consumers simply don't want wild animals to suffer extreme pain and fear for the sake of fashion".

The passing of this landmark law, which was supported by fashion designers like Stella McCartney and Diane von Furstenberg, comes just a few weeks after Governor Newsom sign Assembly Bill 273, another groundbreaking animal rights bill, into law.

Another law protects California's wild and domestic horses from slaughter.
