Samsung promises to fix Galaxy S10 fingerprint unlock bug

Samsung promises to fix Galaxy S10 fingerprint unlock bug”

"Samsung Electronics is aware of the case of the S10's malfunctioning fingerprint recognition and will soon issue a software patch", the company told Reuters in a statement.

At present, anyone can unlock a Samsung Galaxy S10 with their own fingerprint, even if it isn't registered with the security software. It was believed that the ultrasonic sensor inside the smartphone was reading gel and then combining it with the fingerprint, effectively creating a scenario in which any fingerprint sensor looked like the real deal.

Moreover, Kakaobank, a South-Korea based online bank, has issued an advisory to its customers for turning off the fingerprint authentication method until Samsung fixes the issue. Products that aren't certified by Samsung can mess with the fingerprint recognition system, but in a way we didn't see coming.

Previous reports suggested some screen protectors were incompatible with Samsung's reader because they left a small air gap that interfered with the scanning.

Samsung originally told United Kingdom publication the Sun, which first reported the issue, that it was looking into the issue.

Lisa quickly found out that the device could be unlocked using any of her digits, and worse yet, her husband had no problem doing the same even though none of his prints were registered prior to acquiring the unnamed £2.70 ($3.45) screen protector. Not only will someone else need to get a hold of your device, but they'll have to install an unsupported screen protector to then attempt to break into your phone.
