Scotland must hold independence referendum in 2020 - SNP's Sturgeon

Scotland must hold independence referendum in 2020 - SNP's Sturgeon”

"And it must have the recognition of the worldwide community".

The third and final day of the SNP's Autumn Conference got underway in Aberdeen today, finishing with a keynote address by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Sturgeon said that though she understood the importance of the rule of law, "any law that sends politicians to prison for organising a vote is a law that surely needs to change".

In another election promise, Sturgeon said that he SNP would scrap non-residential social care charges for everyone in the next parliamentary term.

Ms Sturgeon said another referendum on independence "must happen next year" as she outlined her plan to try to force the United Kingdom government to give her permission to hold another vote.

'By the new year, we will have completed our legislative preparations. "Before the end of this year, I will demand the transfer of power that puts the legality of that referendum beyond any doubt".

"I don't know about you but I'm utterly sick of Westminster".

"But we don't just have a right to offer the people of Scotland a choice over their future - in the circumstances now Scotland faces, we have a duty to do so".

Sturgeon largely focused her speech on making the positive case for Scottish independence, outlining examples of the SNP's record in government, and on setting the independence movement apart from the "disaster" of Brexit. Not by undermining democracy, demonising those who disagree, and plastering lies on the side of a bus. "We are winning the case for independence". Let's win our nation's independence'.

Before lunch, a Scotland's Future event was held to discuss the growing need for Scotland to become an independent country. It must be legal.

Telling delegates that the party already had "a cast iron mandate for an independence referendum", Sturgeon reiterated the importance of holding a vote that is legal and internationally recognised.

"That's what I call the best of both worlds", she added.

Ms Sturgeon also used her address to launch a series of attacks on Boris Johnson's "disastrous" Brexit strategy as she insisted that a No Deal divorce from the European Union was "unthinkable".

She continued: "His plans would take Scotland out of the EU, out of the single market and out of the customs union". But let me be clear about this.

"The Tories are still in power, Boris Johnson is prime minister - and those who led that No campaign will never be trusted by the people of Scotland ever again".

She added: 'For Scotland, Brexit shows that the Westminster system is broken and it is broken utterly beyond fix. But I have a message for any Westminster party that wants SNP support.

Instead of that, she declared it was "time to place Scotland's future in Scotland's hands".
