Watch the first all-women spacewalk on Friday

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch are set to conduct the first spacewalk to be performed by two women on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. "However, the failed power unit does prevent a new lithium-ion battery installed earlier this month from providing additional station power".

Watch live coverage here on NASA TV and nasa.gov/live Friday beginning at 6:30 a.m.

They will leave the station's Quest airlock at 7:50 a.m. Three battery replacement spacewalks will be rescheduled, and five spacewalks to fix a cosmic particle detector remain on the calendar for November and December.

A message posted on NASA website reads, "The High Definition Earth-Viewing (HDEV) experiment on the International Space Station has experienced a loss of data, and ground computers are no longer receiving communications from the payload". But according to Space.com, only 15 women have participated in spacewalks, and all were accompanied by men.

In the clip above, the pair of astronauts were asked by a reporter what they thought about their possible participation in the first-ever all-female spacewalk, as well as how Koch feels about her accomplishments often being viewed through the lens of her gender.

It seems that the all-female spacewalk, while notable, isn't an event that NASA was trying to consciously facilitate.

She was replaced on board in September by Meir. Only one of the two medium-size suits on the space station was prepped for a spacewalk, so astronaut Nick Hague - wearing a size large - accompanied Koch on the March walk instead. "We're doing this work as an efficient team working together with everybody else", she said. "It's really nice to see how far we've come".
