Airline ditches 'ladies and gentlemen' in favour of more politically correct term”

Air Canada has traditionally greeted its passengers with an introduction that includes the words "ladies and gentlemen".

Air Canada has not yet announced when the new gender-neutral greetings will be implemented by on-board staff.

Air Canada didn't say when the changes will go into effect, according to CTV. A company memo stated, "we want to ensure an inclusive space for everyone, including those who identify with gender X".

"We might be amending our onboard bulletins to modernize them and take away particular references to gender", a media spokesperson for the corporate advised CTV.

The change in language will be adopted by gate agents, flight attendants and pilots. "We work hard to make sure all employees feel like valued members of the Air Canada family, while ensuring our customers are comfortable and respected when they choose to travel with us", they continued.

Many have praised the airline's decision as a big win for diversity and inclusion, but online most of the responses have been negative.

In March, the United Airlines became the first USA airline to recognize gender-neutral pronouns after offering a gender-neutral title "Mx" alongside "Mr" and "Mrs".

Earlier this year, U.S. airlines represented by the Airlines for America trade group including American, United, and Southwest announced that they would add an "X" option for non-binary passengers on their boarding passes from June 2019.

Addressing passengers as "ladies and gentlemen" is discriminatory against those who don't identify as either, Air Canada has decided.
