Bomb ‘detonated’ on elementary school playground, students evacuated

Bomb ‘detonated’ on elementary school playground, students evacuated”

On Tuesday, authorities at a Montana elementary school mistook a plastic bottle that was found covered in tape on the school's grounds as an explosive.

According to Sheriff Leo Dutton, the object was a bottle filled with gears or machine parts and an unknown liquid that does not appear flammable. Law enforcement have not yet identified where the explosive device came from. "Investigation by officials determined it did not explode". Dutton said no children were in the vicinity and he did not immediately know whether the explosion damaged any property.

Additional tests will be completed on the object found on the playground, but they are not expected to show any unsafe material. Officials say nobody was injured as a result of the explosion. It detonated shortly after.

Sierra Rd. has been closed between N. Montana and Frontage Road.

Buses were set up at a schoolhouse to keep students warm while they waited for their parents to pick them up.

All schools in the state's capital city, as well as East Helena, were initially locked down after the incident as authorities searched those locations.

The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Montana Highway Patrol were assisting sheriff's and Helena police officials in the investigation.

"What precautions have been taken so far is all of the kids in Rossiter school are out for the day, they were given a safe evacuation route over to the little red school house".

Dutton described the bomb as a soda bottle with duct tape, but declined to remark on the device's other components.

'The District has been cleared to lift the lockdown of the schools. "Rossiter School is done for the day, and the rest of the schools are back to business as usual". It has not been determined yet if Rossiter Elementary School students will be allowed to return to class on Wednesday.
