How Deadpool 2 Helped With Zombieland: Double Tap

How Deadpool 2 Helped With Zombieland: Double Tap”

With new threats and a changing landscape, Zombieland is not what it was 10 years ago, and the first few minutes of the film perfectly fill both newcomers and fans alike in on what we've missed. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) refers to Homers (the dumb ones), Hawkings (the smart ones), Ninjas (the silent ones) and a new breed that is faster, smarter and harder to take down - they either go by the sobriquet Bolt (as in Usain) or T-800, as in Terminators; also returning to theatres this November! Meanwhile, Tallahassee has taken on the role of adopted father to the angst-ridden Little Rock (Breslin), who dreams of leaving the nest and meeting people her own age. And while this playfully violent return to his horror comedy origins certainly has its share of fleeting pleasures, the formulaic screenplay by Dave Callaham, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is content delivering a predictable storyline that too often mirrors the action beats of the original. For a bit, they feel at home, but Little Rock feels left out by the relationship between Columbus and Wichita. David Sardy composed the score, while the cinematography is by Chung-hoon Chung.

Much to my surprise, "Zombieland: Double Tap" may actually be better than its predecessor, doing everything a good sequel needs to do.

There's a surprisingly high amount of charm on display here, in between the blood and guts. The returning cast are all great (though Breslin is way under-used), while Deutch is a major stand out among the new additions. The balance leads to some really amusing gags, even if admittedly nothing is as creatively fresh as what we saw in the original entry. Fleischer, however, leaves less of a mark. Suddenly, everyone, even his PA, either turns into a zombie or gets mauled by one. If there's a third installment, he probably isn't an essential piece of the puzzle.

Zombieland was a runaway hit when it came out in 2009 - and not just because its main character, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), prioritized cardio above all else in the film's post-apocalyptic environment. Fans can give this one a look today, and in all likelihood, it'll majorly satisfy. Those pictures were more smug and less amusing than Zombieland, but they share its caustic self-awareness and its ultraviolence.

But, before we dive into spoiler territory, those who have not seen Zombieland will want to know whether it's worth waiting through the credits. Yep, the last scene of the film is Bill Murray pretending to be sick.

Be sure to check out Zombieland: Double Tap, in theaters everywhere this weekend!
