India's Moon Mission-2 sends 1st illuminated image of Lunar surface

India's Moon Mission-2 sends 1st illuminated image of Lunar surface”

"IIRS has now sent its first illuminated image of the lunar surface".

According to an official release by ISRO, "the images captured by the IIRS shows, part of lunar farside in the northern part of the Moon, covering some prominent craters". The Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS) onboard the lunar probe is created to measure the reflected sunlight and emitted portion of Moonlight from the lunar surface in narrow and contiguous spectral channels (bands) ranging from ~800-5000 nanometre (0.8-5.0 micrometres).

Thursday released the first illuminated image of the lunar surface acquired by Chandrayaan2's Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS) payload.

The image shows that the Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS) is able to measure the variations in the reflected solar radiation and identify various features like crater central peaks, crater floors, the inner-rims of the craters, and very fresh reworked ejecta associated with small craterlets within the crater floor of a large crater.

After the Chandrayaan-2's lunar lander Vikram had a hard-landing on the lunar surface, it has been lying there from September 6.

"It makes exercise of a grating to fracture up and disperse the reflected sunlight hours (and emitted component) into rather about a spectral bands. More detailed analysis that follows, is expected to yield important results on the heterogeneity of lunar surface composition", added the ISRO statement.

In a observation to national broadcaster Doordarshan, ISRO chief K Sivan had blamed monstrous execution of the closing stage of the operation for the loss of dialog.

On Monday, NASA made another attempt to locate Chandrayaan-2 Vikram Lander using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) which has taken another set of images in favourably better lighting conditions of the region where Vikram Lander had a hard landing. However, on September 7, the mission suffered a setback when the Vikram lander lost its communication with the ground stations.
