Minnesota reports 2nd and 3rd deaths from vaping-related lung disease

All 29 patients' medical records have been reviewed by DPH.

The CDC also says that among 573 patients with information on substances used in e-cigarette or vaping products in the three months prior to symptom onset, about 76% reported using THC-containing products; 32% reported exclusive use of THC-containing products; about 58% reported using nicotine-containing products; and 13% reported exclusive use of nicotine-containing products.

According to the MDH, more than 1,300 lung injury cases associated with vaping in 49 states, Washington, D.C., and one territory have been reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nationally, at least 29 vaping related deaths in 22 states have now been reported after another death was also confirmed in Montana Wednesday.

The other patient had vaped unknown products in addition to nicotine.

Of the 29 cases, 10 are confirmed and 19 are probable.

In the meantime, officials say that people using nicotine e-cigarettes as quit aids should not go back to smoking combustible cigarette, but are particularly warning young people and pregnant women against vaping.

Vaping-related illnesses in the US are still rising, though at a slightly slower pace.

The CDC reports the cases are from 49 states, the District of Columbia and the one USA territory.

But because the cause of the lung illnesses remains unclear, "the only way to assure that you are not at risk while the investigation continues is to consider refraining from use of all e-cigarette, or vaping, products", the CDC says on its website. Twenty-eight people have died.

The numbers that have risen rapidly since the first death was reported in August have helped fuel a crackdown on battery-powered devices that simulate smoking.

MA health officials have reported 10 new cases of vaping-associated pulmonary injury to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Specifically, vaping cartridges obtained off the street or from other informal sources, such as friends, family members or illicit dealers have been linked to most of the cases and play a major role in the outbreak.

Most patients report a history of using tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products.

The ban includes the sale of all flavored e-cigarette products, including flavored nicotine, THC, and CBD vaping products, in-store and online.

"It may be there's no one cause, no one causative agent, but multiple", Mitch Zeller, director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the US Food and Drug Administration, said at a recent news briefing.

"The ban allows us a pause so that we can do these investigations and further our understanding and put in regulatory framework to protect all of us and especially our youth", Bharel said.
