There is still time to get your flu shot

The flu season officially started September 29, and San Juan Basin Public Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment urge everyone ages 6 months and older to get vaccinated, ideally before the end of October. "The flu vaccine is created to (develop) antibodies against the flu virus and protect you from either catching the flu or, if you still catch the flu, it helps make it less likely that you'll have a severe case and need to be hospitalized".

As flu season slowly gets into full swing, the Illinois Department of Public Health is looking to dispel myths about the flu vaccine. However, the 2018-2019 flu season lasted through May, catching many health experts off-guard, he adds.

Schmidt says they recommend young people get the vaccinations.

"The most important thing is to get vaccinated, but in addition to that: hand hygiene", said Dr. Kamitsuka. Flu vaccine is also available for adults 19 years and up.

Flu season typically lasts from October through March and sometimes trickles into early April, says Niket Sonpal, M.D., an internist and gastroenterologist based in New York City. Werner echoed that statement and said the shot is inactivated, meaning it's not a live vaccine and can not give someone the virus.

Anyone who has already had the flu this season doesn't need to get vaccinated.

George Han, deputy health officer and infectious disease and response branch director with the Department of Health, to learn whether some commonly held beliefs about the flu and the flu vaccine - which it recommends for everyone 6 months and older - are true or false. Usually, children are the most likely to contract flu and adults over age sixty-five report the smallest amount of cases.

The state is reporting that flu activity increased last month.

Parents should also be diligent in learning if flu has been reported in the schools their children attend.

"That's something that you think is just the flu, but for 138 families it was more than just the flu", Werner said. CDC estimates that nearly 80,000 people died from flu in 2018 and nearly 50 million people contracted the illness.

Bhowmick: Besides protecting you from common strains of the flu, the vaccine will lessen the severity of symptoms if you contract a strain that was not included.
