Blizzard cancels Overwatch event at Nintendo's NY store

Blizzard cancels Overwatch event at Nintendo's NY store”

Tomorrow (Wednesday, October 16) was supposed to be a pretty big day for Overwatch fans who live in NY.

Please be aware that the previously announced Overwatch launch event scheduled for Wednesday, 10/16 at NintendoNYC has been cancelled by Blizzard. It was due to take place tomorrow, but now that event has been cancelled by Blizzard. I suspect not all of the protesters will remain outside the event. Confirming that both the open event and reservation only part of the event was canceled by Blizzard.

Neither Blizzard nor Nintendo gave a reason for the event's cancellation.

Blizzard's actions are unfortunately inline with a disturbing and growing trend among western companies that are doing everything possible to avoid offending China in the face of the communist country's crackdown on democracy. Polygon has reached out to Blizzard for more information.

The worldwide backlash to Blizzard was swift and protesters in Hong Kong even started using Overwatch hero Mei as an unofficial mascot, cosplaying as her and making signs with her famous voice lines like "the world is worth fighting for".

Blizzard didn't take too kindly to this, and chose to ban to ban Blitzchung from 2019's Hearthstone Grandmasters Official Competition, while also taking the prize money he earned during Grandmasters Season 2. Many, however, have accused the company of making the interests of the Chinese, economic partners of the company, overshadowing human rights and freedom of expression and speech, and have threatened to boycott it by announcing protests.

Blizzard Entertainment has canceled its launch event for Overwatch on Nintendo Switch, which was scheduled for October 16 at the Nintendo store in New York City. However, the original tweet promoting the event was flooded by #BoycottBlizzard and #StandWithHongKokng hashtags, which began following the company's decision to punish a Hearthstone player for publicly supporting the Hong Kong protests.
