Brexit in the balance as British MPs hold historic vote

Brexit in the balance as British MPs hold historic vote”

But at least nine Labour MPs are expected to rebel and the PM is hoping to be backed by some of the Tory MPs he sacked for opposing him last month.

Downing Street told the Times that Johnson would focus the next 24 hours on "selling a great deal and importantly selling the opportunity to parliament to get Brexit done".

Business in the House of Commons will start at 9:30 BST - the first weekend sitting since the invasion of the Falklands in 1982.

Mr Johnson will make a statement to the House and face questions from MPs, before they move on to a debate about the deal.

Sir Oliver Letwin, the former Tory Cabinet minister who now sits as an independent, has thrown the so-called "super Saturday" session of Parliament into new territory by tabling a motion allowing for amendments to Government proposals.

His threat added to one from European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, however reports have suggested Germany's Angela Merkel believes a delay is inevitable if MPs reject the agreement on Saturday. It ditches former PM Theresa May's backstop, the measure created to prevent a return to physical checks on the Irish border. Instead it will, in effect, draw a new customs border along the Irish Sea.

Speaking from Brussels, Brexit Party Leader Nigel Farage MEP speaks to GMB about the deal that Boris Johnson has taken to the EU.

The opposition Labour Party has not said whether it will support the amendment, but doing so would be consistent with their opposition to Johnson's exit deal.

A Survation poll for the Daily Mail found 50% of respondents said MPs should back Mr Johnson's Brexit deal, with 38% against.

Johnson's Conservative Party has 287 voting MPs, though it's not a guarantee all will side with Johnson to approve the new Brexit deal.

The compromise deal that was finally struck on Thursday has a new arrangement for keeping open the border between British Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

"Today we MPs (Members of Parliament) have the chance to free you from the never-ending Brexit saga and move this country forward", Mr Johnson wrote.

And writing in the Sun, Mr Johnson urged MPs to back his deal, saying: "There have been any number of false dawns". Deadlines for our departure have come and gone.

ERG chairman Steve Baker yesterday tweeted that his group will not announce any position on the new deal until today morning.

'A hard, divisive and - yes - painful chapter in our history would be at an end'.

And Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said his party would reject the new withdrawal agreement.

Labour lawmaker John Mann said Friday that he thought at least 10 party legislators would support the government's deal. "It will come down to one, two or five people", said Joelle Grogan, a senior lecturer in United Kingdom and European Union law at Middlesex University.

If Parliament does not vote the deal through, Mr Johnson is compelled under the Benn Act to request a further Brexit delay to the end of January - something he has previously refused to countenance.

He insists that Brexit must happen this month to end to uncertainty that has weighed on the economy and dominated political and public debate.

He would be required to do so under a new opposition-led law created to prevent a no-deal Brexit.

Former Tory Sir Oliver Letwin - one of the MPs who lost the Tory whip for backing the law - has put an amendment down to ensure the extension is asked for even if MPs back the deal in the Commons later.
