China Halts Release of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

China Halts Release of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’”

Quentin Tarantino reportedly won't be making changes to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for a China release. Although, sources close to the Chinese Film Bureau and Bona (OUATIH's Chinese co-financier) claim that Bruce Lee's daughter made a direct appeal to Chinese censors to alter her father's portrayal. No official reason was given, but according to reports, the country's regulators took issue with the film's polarizing depiction of Bruce Lee. Like the rest of Hollywood in 2019, Sony and Bona need their film to be released in China, so they're probably working with the censors this very moment to produce an admissible cut of the film.

Lee blasted Tarantino in July, complaining that the director had portrayed her dad as a "caricature" and an "arrogant a-hole who was full of hot air".

Tarantino has defended the depiction, saying it is meant to be fictional, as Lee interacts with Brad Pitt's fictional stuntman Cliff Booth in the film. The film was heavily edited and re-released a month later, by which time pirated versions of the original were already widespread in China.

THR said Bona's equity stake in "Once Upon a Time" was large enough to give the Beijing-based backer participation in its worldwide box office and distribution rights in Greater China. In 2012, his Western Django Unchained was set to get a proper theatrical rollout in China and even received permission to screen before it was similarly pulled from cinemas minutes before its opening night - reportedly due to the film's graphic violence.
