Corey Crawford to start in goal for Blackhawks vs. Oilers

Corey Crawford to start in goal for Blackhawks vs. Oilers”

The Edmonton Oilers started the National Hockey League season 5-0-0 for the first time in 34 years, and made National Hockey League history by becoming the first team to ever go 5-0-0 when trailing in every game.

Corey Crawford got the start over Robin Lehner and looked sharp after puck drop, stopping all 12 Oilers' shots in the first period.

Patrick Kane scored the first goal of the game 4:11 into the second period, beating Edmonton goalie Mike Smith glove side with a wrist shot.

But it's safe to say that the Blackhawks might be a little more than eager to try and get into the win column for the first time in the 2019-2020 season after a disappointing first three outings of the season.

"We didn't play well enough to win at all", McDavid said.

Saad's empty-net goal with 32.7 seconds remaining in the third period sealed the outcome for Chicago which notched its first victory of the season through four games.

"There are things we need to work on but we move on to the next game".

"I think we were doing everything good tonight", Crawford said. "He's really good. That team has some weapons and he was there". The PK was strong, even though we gave up that one [late], it was strong early in the game.

Head coach Dave Tippett is leaning heavily on Leon Draisaitl.

"You can't make mistakes that are going to cost your team an opportunity to stay in it", he said.

The Blackhawks will be able to do that after they put together their best performance of the season Monday.

Each team had several prime chances in a freely skated but scoreless first period. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins slid a pass across the front of the crease for Neal, who poked it above Crawford's outstretched leg for his eighth goal in six games. The Hawks ran the show after that, outshooting Edmonton 17-6 in the middle frame and probably deserve more for their efforts than a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Set up after Dylan Strome won a draw in the left circle, Kane fired in a quick high shot from the hashmarks with Andrew Shaw heading to the net to screen.

McDavid accelerated around defenseman Olli Maatta and cut in on Crawford, but the veteran goalie blocked McDavid's stuff-in attempt with his right pad.

The Hawks are now 1-2-1 in their first four games of the season. Edmonton D Adam Larsson (fractured right fibula) missed his fifth game. The teams meet again twice this season, on February 11 in Edmonton and March 5 in Chicago.
